SSiB and its sensitivity to soil properties a case study using HAPEX-Mobilhy data

چکیده
In this paper, SSiB's development and some of its major parameterizations in the model are briefly reviewed. The soil moisture parameterizations, which are a key element in the model, are comprehensively described. The sensitivity study shows that hydraulic conductivity at saturation, B parameter, and wilting point have a profound impact on the simulation of soil moisture, hut with different features. Both hydraulic conductivity at saturation and B parameter influence the soil moisture simulation by changing the soil hydraulic conductivity and the field capacity. The changes in equilibrium soil water content in this study are consistent with the changes in field capacity. The wilting point affects the soil moisture through vegetation transpiration. Through these sensitivity studies, improvements in modeling the soil moisture content of HAPEX-Mobilhy data are made. The soil moisture simulations at six Russian sites are also re-examined. After applying the results from the sensitivity studies of the HAPEX-Mobilhy data, the soil moisture simulation of the Russian data is significantly improved.

Various components of the land surface, their individual hydrological processes and the process-oriented models are reviewed in this paper, with the focus on their application in global climate models (GCMs). The Biosphere–Atmosphere Transfer Scheme (BATS) is examined regarding its performance for three different surfaces (crop, forest and grass), with available data from HAPEX-MOBILHY, ABRACOS...
متن کاملBrief description of bare essentials of surface transfer and results from simulations with the HAPEX-MOBILHY data
The Bare Essentials of Surface Transfer (BEST) land surface scheme is briefly described and the key physical parameterisations discussed. Results are then presented to illustrate how the model performs, with forcing data for HAPEX-MOBILHY, compared to a series of other schemes in the simulation of evaporation and sensible heat. The implications of the models performance, and some indications of...

HAPEX-MOBILHY data, consisting of one year of hourly atmospheric forcing data at Caumont (SAMER No. 3, 43.68°N, 0.1°W) were used repeatedly to run the two-layer Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC-2L) land-surface scheme until the model reached equilibrium in its water and energy balance. The equilibrium results are compared with one year of weekly soil moisture measurements at different depths...
متن کاملSoil moisture simulation: Achievements of the RICE and PILPS intercomparison workshop and future directions
Soil moisture simulation in current landsurface schemes is diverse: in terms of the realism (and complexity) of the parameterizations and in terms of the resulting predictions. Even after careful adjustment, the range in soil moisture among the results from the 14 schemes compared for the HAPEX-MOBILHY (S. France) site's 1.6 m soil layer remains around 100 mm (the annual precipitation for HAPEX...
متن کاملValidation of soil moisture simulation in landsurface parameterisation schemes with HAPEX data
In the Soil Moisture Simulation Workshop, a number of numerical experiments was conducted with fourteen representative schemes and the results compared with HAPEX-MOBILHY data. This paper documents the general outcomes of the workshop, and provides the background information for the other papers presented in this special issue, which deal with more specific aspects of soil moisture simulation a...
